Catrin phoned Chris and told him. “I will swing by home, get some overnight things and head out after the rush hour. And you?”

He said, “I will be late tonight anyway; I am on duty cover, remember? I am currently working on a smelly mobile phone, searching it. It arrived in an evidence bag and you could smell the pee as soon as I opened it.”

Chris Treneer worked one day a week as ‘duty cover’; lunchtimes and after the regular working day until 8.00 p.m. Then once a month he drew ‘night cover’; from 8.00 p.m. until 8.00 a.m. Most e-crime technical service support was regular day work, but there had to be emergency coverage at all times.

Catrin had started out in support of drug squad work, so she had an inkling of Chris’s task.

“Don’t tell me; the mobile was thrown in the toilet as they arrested someone. Will you get anything off it, then?”

“Yes, it jolted on the porcelain, disconnecting the battery. From high end systems to lowly mobile phones, that’s us. The battery is fried but the chips are OK, it seems. But I have to get on, sorry love. DI Steadman is standing next to me, breathing down my neck.”

Catrin laughed.

“Say hello. I will call when I get to the hotel. Call my mobile if you need me before then. I should be back tomorrow during the day sometime.”

As Chris closed the call, Steadman said, “Is Catrin settling in OK at her new position?”

He had worked with her on the Greaves case in Falmouth.

“So-so; it has its ups and downs,” Treneer replied neutrally.
